Creating new words

There are four main kinds of word formation: prefixes, suffixes, conversion and compounds.

word formationExamples:

Suffixation

Multinational = multi + nation + al  ( uses both a prefix and suffix)

Conversion

Text = Can you read the text? (noun) or Can you text her ? (verb)

Compounding

with a hyphen:

multi-word ; postwar ; dry-cleaning

no hyphen:

swimming pool; language skills ; mother tongue

joined words:

headache; mailbox; sunflower
